Dr. Patrick Marcus, president of Marcus Engineering LLC, received two honors recently in separate ceremonies held in Tucson, Ariz.
The first, given by the University of Arizona’s College of Engineering, was presented to Marcus as part of the University’s 100th Homecoming celebration in November during the College’s 51st annual Engineering Breakfast. The event helps support the student scholarship program. The breakfast also recognizes alumni and community leaders who have demonstrated outstanding service and advancing the field of engineering through advocacy, community service, and professional achievement.
The Bear Down Award, established in 1986, is given to alumni and non-alumni who have performed noteworthy or meritorious service to, or on behalf of, The University of Arizona. Marcus earned his bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the UA in 1999, and his doctorate in 2006.
Since starting his own company in 2011, Marcus says he is committed to connecting with the university and business community wherever possible to provide advice and service in the areas entrepreneurship, engineering and innovation to help grow the local economy. He has guest lectured at the UA and the Eller College of Business, and has participated as an advisory board member, mentor and resource for students.
“I try to offer students a real-world perspective on the need for gaining experience through internships and other opportunities as early in their ducation as possible,” he says. “When there are exciting things happening in the community—whether it’s a new program starting up or an ngineering or tech firm opening—I try to show up at every opportunity. I think it’s important that students see the business community connecting with the University and the growth of business in our region. Down the road, these students represent the talent I’ll be looking for to grow my business, so it’s a way that we can all be successful.”
In December, Marcus was named Man of the Year for 2014 at the 40-Under-40 Awards celebration, presented by the Tucson Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. The awards recognize young leaders in Tucson based on professional accomplishments, leadership qualities, and community impact. Marcus, 37, was one of 38 recognized in the 10th annual celebration.
“It’s an honor to be acknowledged by my peers, both at the University and in the broader Tucson community,” Marcus says of the awards. “While I am humbled by the recognition, I still feel there is much more I can do.
“We need to continue to find ways to encourage our young professionals to become people who not only want to live in Tucson, but also people who want to build Tucson. Business awards like these help recognize the young talent that exists in the region.
“These are very exciting times for Tucson, and I’m proud to be included in this dynamic class of young professionals,” he adds.
